Warning your thermostat could be in wrong place as simple step could save you £100 - LancsLive
People are being urged to take action over their thermostat to cut their energy bills - with one step alone saving you around £100. Nearly one month after the 10% price cap rise, Brits have felt the pinch of Ofgem’s decision.
But the key to keeping your energy bill could lie in your thermostat. Andy Kerr, founder at BOXT, explained: “Using a home thermostat correctly can make a significant impact on your energy consumption and lower your bills.”
He highlighted some of the most common mistakes that could be costing households hundreds during the winter months, and how to properly use your thermostat instead. It all starts with precisely where in the house your thermostat is located.
This might not seem all that important but its placement in relation to your central heating could make it inaccurate, meaning it won’t reach the temperature you set it at. Ideally, Andy recommended placing it in the centre of your home on an interior wall 5 feet above the floor.
Setting the temperatures too high to heat your home quickly doesn’t actually work, the energy expert warned. He explained: “Instead, it will just make the system run for longer to reach the higher temperature and therefore use more energy. You could save over £100 a year on your energy bill by turning down their thermostat just one degree.”
One of the more seemingly obvious tips Andy has is not to waste heat on empty homes or rooms. He encouraged people to turn down their heating when they’re out and potentially install thermostatic valves so you can control the temperature in each room individually.
Finally, the expert urged people to invest in a smart thermostat if they want to stay on top of their energy consumption and make sure their bills don’t get out of hand. He shared: “Smart thermostats allow you to control your heating remotely.
"They also closely track your energy use and show you how your energy use varies at different times. Many smart thermostats also give you tips on reducing your usage and lowering your heating costs, helping you make significant savings."
